Bedroom Colors for Sleep![]() The bedroom is designed to serve one primary purpose: sleep. But unfortunately, many Americans have made their bedrooms rooms for watching TV, working and exercising and very few actually use it solely for the purpose for which it was meant. The Centers for Disease control says that about 50 to 70 million Americans don’t sleep through the night. This has been a persisting health concern because sleep deprivation plays a huge role in health problems such as obesity and hypertension for a lot of people. Now the question is why are we not sleeping as much as we ought to in our bedrooms? It may not be the quarrel you picked up with your spouse or an upcoming work review that’s stopping you from sleeping through the night. Most of us have our individual recipes for a successful night sleep such as a firm and comfortable mattress, smooth sheets, fluffy pillows, blackout blinds and perhaps some soft background music. But if all these do not stop you from tossing and turning through the night, your problem might just be solved by painting your bedroom with a soothing and tranquility-inducing color that will give you that 7 or 8 hours of (sound) sleep. The choice of paint color you use for painting your bedroom doesn’t just have an effect on the look of it, it also affects the way the room makes you feel. This is determined by two color groups. Cool colors take you inwards and bright colors take you out of yourself and make you more sociable. ![]() Soothing colors So if you want a peaceful and calm bedroom space, go for a muted blue which is considered to be the most serene shade. Travelodge, a hotel booking site, studied 2,000 British homes and discovered that participants who slept in a room painted blue got the best night’s sleep, enjoying an average of 7 hours and 52 minutes of sleep nightly. The reason for this has to do with the eyes. Ganglion cells which are special receptors in the eyes are most sensitive to the color blue. These cells are responsible for relaying information to the part of the brain that regulates the body’s biological clock, which has an effect on everything from how you feel every day to performance. Since the color blue is associated with tranquility, the ganglion cells pick up this feeling and transfer it to your brain which helps lower blood pressure and heart rate, all of which are necessary conditions for a good night’s sleep. However, if you don’t fancy the color blue, don’t be dismayed. Other colors can also do the job. Shades of yellow, orange and green can also improve the quality of your sleep. In this regard, the study revealed that shades of yellow followed closely behind blue with participants clocking in 7 hours and 40 minutes. This was closely followed by green (7 hours and 36 minutes), silver (7 hours and 33 minutes) and orange (7 hours and 28 minutes). The study also found that the worst bedroom colors were purple (5 hours and 56 minutes), brown (6 hours and 5 minutes) and grey (6 hours and 12 minutes). The study also made some other interesting findings:
Although the science of paint color for a bedroom may be helpful, it’s definitely not exact. Individual preferences also play a vital role in determining the paint colors that aid sleep. It’s okay to consider the science of color but ultimately, the most important factor is to choose a color that actually appeals to you and helps you sleep. For example, if shades of green appeal to you most, painting a home or bedroom an olive color will most likely be a better choice than a sky blue. Avoid bright colors People often make the mistake of painting a bedroom bright and intense colors. This visually increases the level of energy in the room and thus promotes activities like exercise and works against sleep because these bright colors will make you feel stimulated. It’s also suggested that rather than painting your bedroom ceiling white, use a darker color so that it’ll be easier for you to fall asleep during the day. It is important to note, however, that painting your bedroom blue, green or yellow won’t be the only thing that will solve your insomnia. But if you include all the little things that are necessary for sleep such as proper sleep hygiene, a quiet environment, a comfortable bed and calming scents, you’ll begin to see positive results.
